How to operate and maintain the Horizontal Directional Machine?
Aug 08, 2025| 1. Operational Process
Pre-construction Preparation
Site Survey: Confirm the distribution of underground pipelines (such as gas and cables) to avoid drilling conflicts.
Trajectory Design: Calculate the penetration angle (usually 8° to 20°) based on the pipeline diameter and depth, and plan the pilot hole path.
Pilot Hole Drilling
Drill Bit Selection: Wedge-shaped drill bits for soft soils, roller-cone drill bits for hard rock.
Directional Control: Real-time angle adjustment using sensors built into the drill bit (steering by stopping rotation and flushing with high-pressure mud).
Reaming and Pullback
Stage Reaming: The reamer diameter is 20% to 50% larger than the pipe. Hard rock requires multiple reams.
Pipeline Pullback: The pipe is connected to a rotary joint, assisted by a hydraulic propulsion device (thrust capacity up to 700 tons). II. Maintenance Key Points
Daily Maintenance
Mud System: Replace the mud pump cups and gear oil every 400 hours to prevent clogging.
Hydraulic System: Check the cylinder seals to prevent oil leakage that could lead to reduced thrust.
Maintenance of Key Components
Drill Pipe: Apply grease to the threads to prevent sticking.
Engine: Replace the diesel filter, air filter, and engine oil every 400 hours.
Troubleshooting
Stuck Drill: Reverse the drill pipe and flush with high-pressure mud.
Signal Loss: Check the guidance system battery and antenna connection.
III. Safety Standards
Mud Management: Clean the sedimentation tank regularly to prevent environmental contamination.
Personnel Protection: Operators must wear noise-canceling earplugs (drilling rig noise > 85 decibels).
