Can trenchless drilling technology be applied to drilling operations in deep-sea engineering?

Feb 09, 2026|

Trenchless drilling technology refers to a drilling method that does not require disturbing the Earth's surface. It can be applied to groundwater wells, coal mine gas extraction, post-mining goaf extraction, geological forecasting, and underground cavity detection. However, the application of trenchless drilling technology in deep-sea engineering still faces certain challenges and difficulties.

First, the environment of deep-sea engineering is extremely complex. High water pressure, low seabed temperature, and strong seawater corrosiveness make trenchless drilling technology less adaptable to the deep-sea environment. Currently, the commonly used drilling method in deep-sea engineering is the use of offshore drilling rigs, which involve drilling operations using lifting equipment installed on the seabed. This method is adaptable to the characteristics of the deep-sea environment, but still faces many difficulties during operation.

Second, drilling operations in deep-sea engineering often need to be carried out under complex seabed geological conditions, such as variations in seabed crustal structure and overlapping seabed geological layers. This places higher demands on the application of trenchless drilling technology. Trenchless drilling technology is suitable for relatively homogeneous and continuous formations, but it may not be able to accurately locate and drill in complex formations. Therefore, when applying trenchless drilling technology in deep-sea engineering, technological improvements and innovations are needed to address the complexity of seabed geology.

Furthermore, deep-sea drilling operations often require large-scale exploration and extraction work, and the operational efficiency of trenchless drilling technology is relatively low. Current trenchless drilling technology mainly uses wire-rope driven rotary drilling, which is complex to operate and slow. Deep-sea engineering requires consideration of large-scale operational needs; therefore, trenchless drilling technology needs further improvement in operational efficiency.

In addition, impurities and particulate matter in the deep-sea environment also have a certain impact on the application of trenchless drilling technology. The presence of seabed sediments can affect the smooth progress of drilling; therefore, sediment treatment and removal need to be considered in deep-sea engineering. Trenchless drilling technology needs to solve the drilling problems in environments with impurities and particulate matter to ensure drilling quality and operational effectiveness.

In conclusion, the application of trenchless drilling technology in deep-sea engineering faces numerous challenges and difficulties. Currently, although some adaptation issues remain, with continuous technological advancements and innovations, the application potential of trenchless drilling technology in deep-sea engineering is expected to gradually emerge. Through research and improvement of trenchless drilling technology, the efficiency and quality of drilling operations in deep-sea engineering can be enhanced, further promoting the exploration and development of deep-sea resources.
