What factors are related to the drilling speed of the Horizontal Directional Drilling Rig?

1. Geological conditions
Formation hardness: Formations of different hardness have a significant impact on the drilling speed. Under soft geological conditions such as sand and clay, the drill bit is easier to cut into the formation, and the drilling speed is relatively fast, generally drilling 5-15 meters per hour. In hard rock formations, the drill bit requires greater pressure and torque to break the rock, and the drilling speed will be greatly reduced, and it may only be able to drill 0.5-2 meters per hour.
Formation stability: Formations with poor stability, such as loose sand or rock layers with cracks, are prone to collapse, affecting the drilling speed. In order to prevent the collapse of the hole wall, it is necessary to reduce the drilling speed and strengthen measures such as mud wall protection, which will undoubtedly increase the construction time. On the contrary, when the formation stability is good, the drilling speed can be appropriately increased.
Groundwater level: The height of the groundwater level will also affect the drilling speed. When the groundwater level is high, the moisture content in the formation is high, which will make sand and soil softer, affect the cutting effect of the drill bit, and reduce the drilling speed. In addition, high water levels may also increase the risk of hole wall collapse, further limiting the drilling speed. When the groundwater level is low, the formation is relatively dry, and the drilling speed may be relatively faster.
2. Drilling rig performance
Power system: Engine power and hydraulic system performance are one of the key factors affecting drilling speed. A more powerful engine can provide more powerful power to the drill bit, making the drill bit rotate faster and have greater thrust during drilling, thereby increasing the drilling speed. The pressure and flow of the hydraulic system also directly affect the working efficiency of the drilling rig. Appropriate hydraulic pressure and flow can ensure the smooth advancement and rotation of the drill rod, making the drilling process smoother and more efficient.
Drill rod and drill bit: The strength, stiffness and connection method of the drill rod will affect the power transmission efficiency. A drill rod with high strength, high stiffness and reliable connection can better transmit torque and thrust, reduce energy loss, and help increase the drilling speed. Different types of drill bits are suitable for different formation conditions, and choosing the right drill bit is crucial to increase the drilling speed. For example, scraper bits have high drilling efficiency in soft formations, while roller bits are more suitable for medium-hard formations, and diamond bits are better for drilling in hard rock formations.
3. Drilling parameter settings
Drilling pressure: Drilling pressure refers to the pressure applied by the drill bit on the drill bit. Properly increasing the drilling pressure can make the drill bit cut into the formation better and increase the drilling speed, but excessive drilling pressure may cause excessive wear or even damage to the drill bit, and also increase the risk of hole wall collapse. Therefore, it is necessary to reasonably adjust the drilling pressure according to the formation conditions and drill bit type. Generally speaking, in soft formations, the drilling pressure can be relatively small, while in hard formations, a larger drilling pressure is required.
Speed: The speed of the drill bit also has an important influence on the drilling speed. If the speed is too fast, the friction and wear between the drill bit and the formation will increase, which may easily cause the drill bit to overheat and damage, and will also affect the accuracy of the drilling; if the speed is too slow, the drilling efficiency will be low. Under different formation conditions, it is necessary to select a suitable speed. For example, in soft formations, the rotation speed can be appropriately increased, while in hard formations, the rotation speed needs to be reduced to ensure the drilling effect and the life of the drill bit.
Feed speed: The feed speed refers to the speed at which the drill rod is advanced. A reasonable feed speed should match the cutting speed of the drill bit. Too fast a feed speed may cause problems such as drill bit blockage and drill jamming, affecting the drilling speed and quality; too slow a feed speed will reduce the drilling efficiency. Generally, the feed speed is adjusted according to the formation conditions and the cutting ability of the drill bit. The feed speed can be relatively fast in soft formations, while it should be appropriately slowed down in hard formations.
4. Guidance system accuracy
The high-precision guidance system can accurately monitor the position, inclination and azimuth of the drill bit in real time, and adjust the drilling direction in time to ensure that the drill bit drills along the predetermined trajectory. If the guidance system has low accuracy, the drill bit may deviate from the predetermined trajectory and need to be adjusted and corrected frequently, which will not only reduce the drilling speed, but also affect the drilling quality and even cause engineering accidents.
5. Mud performance
Mud wall protection: Mud plays an important role in wall protection during drilling and can prevent the hole wall from collapsing. If the mud wall protection performance is not good, the hole wall is prone to collapse, which takes time to deal with, thus affecting the drilling speed. High-quality mud can form a stable mud skin on the hole wall, effectively supporting the hole wall and ensuring the smooth progress of drilling.
Mud chip carrying capacity: Mud also has the function of carrying rock cuttings, bringing the rock cuttings cut by the drill bit out of the borehole in time to avoid the accumulation of rock cuttings in the hole and affecting the drilling efficiency. The performance indicators of mud such as viscosity and density will affect its chip carrying capacity. Appropriate mud performance can ensure the smooth discharge of rock cuttings, so that the drill bit always maintains a good cutting state and improves the drilling speed.
