What are the main components of Trenchless Drilling Machine?
Mar 19, 2025| 1. Drilling rig host
The drilling rig host is the core part of the entire equipment, providing power for drilling and pulling back.
Power system: usually equipped with a high-performance diesel engine or electric motor to provide power for the drilling rig.
Hydraulic system: used to control the push-pull, rotation and reaming of the drilling rig.
Power head: installed at the front end of the drilling rig, used to drive the drill rod to rotate and connect the drill rod and the drill bit.
Push-pull system: used to control the forward and backward movement of the drill rod, providing push-pull force for drilling and pulling back.
2. Drill rod and drilling tools
Drill rods and drilling tools are key components in the drilling process and are in direct contact with underground rock and soil.
Drill rod: used to connect the drill bit and the power head to transmit power and torque. The drill rod is usually made of high-strength steel and has good torsion and bending resistance.
Guide drill bit: with sensors (such as electromagnetic probes or gyroscopes) to monitor the position and posture of the drill bit in real time to ensure the accuracy of the drilling direction.
Hole expander: used to expand the diameter of the pilot hole for subsequent laying of pipelines or cables.
Mud motor: In some drilling rigs, the mud motor is used to provide rotational power for the drill bit and discharge cuttings through the mud circulation system.
3. Mud system
The mud system is used for cooling, lubrication and cuttings discharge during drilling.
Mud pump: provides high-pressure mud for cooling the drill bit, lubricating the drill rod and carrying cuttings out of the hole.
Mud mixing tank: used to prepare and store mud to ensure that the performance of the mud meets the construction requirements.
Mud circulation pipeline: connects the mud pump, drill rod and mud mixing tank to form a mud circulation system.
4. Guidance system
The guidance system is used to monitor and control the trajectory of the drill bit in real time to ensure the accuracy of the drilling direction.
Measurement while drilling system (MWD): transmits the position and attitude information of the drill bit through electromagnetic or wireless signals.
Guidance instrument: used to receive and process the data of the measurement while drilling system and display the position and trajectory of the drill bit in real time.
Control system: used to adjust the push-pull and rotation parameters of the drilling rig according to the data of the guide instrument to ensure the accuracy of the drilling direction.
5. Auxiliary system
The auxiliary system includes some supporting equipment to improve construction efficiency and safety.
Generator: Provides power for the drilling rig and supporting equipment.
Water tanker: Used to replenish the water source of the mud system.
Recovery system: Used to treat the mud generated during the construction process to reduce the impact on the environment.
Safety devices: Including emergency stop switches, guardrails, safety warning devices, etc. to ensure the safety of construction personnel.
6. Operation table
The operation table is the operation center of the drilling rig and is used to control the entire drilling process.
Control panel: Used to control the push-pull, rotation, mud pump and other operations of the drilling rig.
Display screen: Displays the position, posture, push-pull force, torque and other parameters of the drill bit.
Operating handle: Used to manually control the movement of the drilling rig.
7. Walking system
The walking system is used to move the drilling rig so that it can move flexibly on the construction site.
Tracked or wheeled chassis: Used to support the drilling rig and provide mobility.
Travel motor or hydraulic motor: drives the tracks or wheels to move the drilling rig.
8. Electrical system
The electrical system provides power and control signals for the drilling rig.
Generator: provides power for the drilling rig and supporting equipment.
Distribution cabinet: used to distribute and control power.
Control circuit: connects various components to achieve electrical control.
